Christmas Magic....for free!

This is a quick entry, but there are a couple of ideas related to Christmas.  Every year, our kids get a message from Santa Claus.  If you go to www.portablenorthpole.com, you can enter your e-mail information, your child's name and age, and general information about what they need to do to stay on Santa's "nice list."  You can also comment about the type of toy your child wants.  The message will appear in your e-mail for your child to watch.  It is free, and this year, it is particularly cute.

This year, I also added in a letter from Santa.  You can also do this for free at www.freelettersfromsantaclaus.com.  There are 5 different letters to choose from and several options for colors/designs.  You print out the letter yourself, after answering some questions.  You can get it sent from the North Pole, but there was a $3 charge per kid, and I didn't want to wait!

Winter Fun in Akron

Today we went on a playdate at Lock 3 in Akron.  It is located at 200 South Main Street.  The kids had a wonderful time, and I never even knew it existed, until we were invited on the playdate.  There is an outdoor skating rink.  It is free if you have your own skates and $3 to rent them.  There is also a small toboggan chute.  It is $3 to ride for 30 minutes.  You will get a wristband.  Both kids were free, so it only cost $3 for me.  Once the kids went down with us once, they chose to do it on their own.  They have a concession stand and Archie, the talking snowman.  Santa Claus was also there.  Santa and Archie were at no cost.

                                                   Ice skating....
                                                    Sled riding....
                                                   Archie, the talking snowman

Kaylee and Lindsey rating: 6/5-the girls loved everything they did...and the price was completely worthwhile.  This will be a new tradition in our family!

Getting Ready for Christmas

Today, the kids got to go to the North Pole and visit Santa.  There are so many Christmas activities for kids, but the Santa train at Lodi Station Outlet is economical and fun.  A few years ago, we took the girls on the Polar Express.  This is something everyone should do with their kids, as they have a great time.  However, it is not something I would suggest doing every year.  It is quite expensive...when we went it was $35 per person, so it was $140 for our family of 4.  There is really no such thing as a discounted ticket for younger children, unless they are under 1, I believe.   The going rate is now $42 per person, and many of the dates are weekdays, which is hard now that the girls are both in school.  We took the train that went from Akron, and it lasted a few hours.  They have people dressed like elves who entertain the kids, they read stories and there is a car that sells snacks.  They read the Polar Express to the kids, sing songs, give them hot chocolate and cookies, and, when they get to the North Pole, they turn off the lights so you can see the lit up village.  Santa boards the train, gives the kids a jingle bell (like in the book) and, if you are quick, you can snap a picture of your kid with Santa.  Maybe we will go again next year...but from an economic standpoint, you wouldn't want to do it every year.
So, the next best thing is the Santa train at Lodi Station outlet.  At $3.50 per adult and $5 per kid, it is quite a bargain.  Please note, if you choose to do this, take cash!  So, it runs on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-5.  You can't buy tickets until 11:00.  The train runs every 1/2 hour and you have to pick the time you want when you buy the tickets.  The train boards 15 minutes before it departs.  You wait in line, sit on the train (it is somewhat cold) and ride the normal train route, but after returning to where you would depart, you pass it and it stops in front of a store that has been transformed into the North Pole.  There are a bunch of trees that are lit, decorations and Santa and Mrs. Claus.  They read the kids a story and then have them line up so they can get pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus.  Best part---pictures are taken by you and are obviously free.  They take lots of time with every child and are more than accommodating to younger children who are scared, etc.  At the end, they get a candy cane.

First, kids board the train for a ride around the mall.

They get to visit Santa and Mrs. Claus.

They get to listen to a story.
There are some lit up trees...
There is plenty of time to tell Santa what they want for Christmas.

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5--they had a wonderful time and Santa spent a lot of time with them and their friends.  Will definately do this again!

Trick or Treating Festivities

Today we took the kids to Trick-or-Treat Street at the IX Center.  We have never gone before because the price was ridiculously high and you had to pay for parking on top of that.  But, their cousins were in town from North Carolina, and they sold discount 4 packs of tickets (that included a parking pass) at Marc's for $45, so we tried it.  Trick-or-Treat Street runs for two weekends before Halloween.  The first weekend is only on Saturday and Sunday, the next is Friday-Sunday.  They open on the weekends at 11 and close at 9 on Saturdays.  I am not sure of the hours on Fridays or Sundays.  When we got there, it was not very crowded.  We parked pretty close to the entrance.  When you walk in, if you go to the right, there is a section with trick-or-treating stations.  Our kids brought their own Halloween buckets, but if you don't bring one, they will give you a bag.  After going to the stations and collecting treats, they have a bunch of rides the kids can go on.  There was a miniature golf course and pony rides.  I think you had to pay extra for those two things.  They also had things that cost extra--games and concessions.  Overall, the kids had a wonderful time!

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 6/5

Another great Trick-or-Treating event is Boo at the Zoo.  We went a few years ago to the one at the Cleveland Zoo.  It was pretty bad.  They gave the kids a ticket to get a bag of treats, most of which was candy they don't really like.  Last year, we went to the one at the Akron Zoo.  It was a million times better.  If you are going to go to one, definately make it Akron!

Halloween Festival

Yesterday we took the girls to the Halloween Festival at Carlisle Reservation.  It is located at 12882 Diagonal Rd., in LaGrange.  The festival is on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, starting 2 weeks before Halloween.  It runs from 5-7 for kids and 7-10 for older kids and adults (when it becomes scary instead of family-friendly).

Pumpkin Lagoon, on the Halloween trail
This is also on the trail...gets you dizzy...
The winter fairy giving the girls magic dust
View from the Little Green Choo

So, you can go on a train ride (The LIttle Green Choo) or a wagon ride through a trail.  This is free and is not scary.  The wait is usually long (30+ minutes).  The kids do enjoy it though.  The rest of the things are part of the festival, and the cost is $2 per per person, but kids under 3 are free.  They have a few food vendors set up, a bound house and racetrack ($1 tickets) and a Halloween trail.  The trail has a serious of not that scary haunted houses (gets scarier at night) and the kids were given a paper storybook and got a picture to paste in their books after they completed each house.  There was also a bridge to cross where the area around you moved so it made you dizzy and a fairy that gave the kids magic dust.  There was a bubble machine outside of the trail and moving brooms.

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: ...depends on the kid you ask.  Kaylee still got scared at one of the houses when she saw frankenstein and she cried.  Lindsey ran up to the characters and talked to them.  No fear in that kid.  All in all, it was fun and worth it, even though it did rain while we were on the train ride!

Fall Fun...in the Cold!

This weekend, we did a few fun fall activities, but it was extremely cold.  On Friday, the kids saw a movie at Giant Eagle.  The first Friday of every month, out Giant Eage holds a movie night.  The kids have to be at least 3 to go, but they have a great time.  They arrive at 5:30, in their pajamas.  They play a movie, get pictures taken with the them of the movie, get pizza, juice and a cookie.  You have to agree to stay in the store until the movie is over, but it is well worth it.  It is free for kids!

On Saturday, we went to the drive-in.  They have something called Trunk or Treat the last weekend of the season they are open.  You come to the movie, dress up your kids in costumes, decorate your car and pass out candy while the kids trick-or-treat.  The kids had a wonderful time!  This is the first time we have done it, and will definately make plans for next year.
The kids at Trunk or Treat
Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 6/5..we will definately do this again!  The girls loved it...staying up late, watching a movie outside, seeing friends, dressing up and free candy!  It was like kiddie paradise!

On Sunday, we went to Ramseyer Farm, in Wooster.  They have a fall festival every year.  We have gone the past 3 years and always had fun.  Once you pay to get in ($9 for adults, $7 for kids over 2), everything to do is free (with the exception of the scarecrow craft orfood).  They have animals, several cornmazes, a bunch of slides, 2 corn pits, bikes/cars to drive, potato shooting, a huge pumpkin house, and a bunch of other things.  It is located at 3488 Akron Rd in Wooster.

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5-even though it was cold, we still had a lot of fun!

Fairy Houses...

Well, this weekend was dedicated to Fairy Houses.  In case I didn't mention it earlier, I love Pinterest.  I pinned a fairy garden that a woman made for her daughter.  She basically made a house and then made an entire garden in a large bin.  She even made clothes and a swing for the fairy.  My kids are into this type of thing, so I figured I would try it some day.

A few weeks later, I was investigating some ideas of fall activities for the kids.  I found a link for Don Mould's Garden Center in North Ridgeville.  When I clicked on it, there was a link for the new fairy supplies they have.  I thought it was cute, but when I looked at the pictures, I realized that the houses are over $100.  I reverted back to the pin on Pinterest and decided that we would create our own, with a little inspiration from them.
First, we went to get some inspiration.

The Garden Center had everything from houses, to bridges, to fairy house Halloween decorations.  It was all a bit pricey, so we went to Pat Catan's.  I let the girls each pick a birdhouse.  They picked the same one.  Theirs cost $5.  They ranged between $3 and $8.  I also let them each pick a few items for their house.  Lindsey picked a pie with a cookbook and rolling pin and Kaylee picked a watering can and gardening supplies.  We got these from the miniatures section.  They were less than $2 per pack.  I also let them each pick a potted plant for less than $2 each.  I bought them each a fence, for $1.79 each, and a set that had a rake, pitch fork and shovel.  These cost less than $2 each.  They sold the exact same ones at the greenhouse...for $5 each.  They also each picked a color of paint for $1.50 each.
Although they had anything fairy-like you can
imagine at the garden center, it was over-priced.
We went to Pat Catan's instead.
Kaylee wanted her house to be blue.
Lindsey wanted her house to be purple...
and pink, and white, and green and blue.

While the pain dried, we went on a "treasure hunt."  We went to a park and looked for acorns, sticks, rocks and bark that could be used on the houses.  The girls loved doing this!

By the time we got home, the paint was dry.  We finished off the houses by glueing some moss on the roofs.  I then let the girls set up their houses however they wanted.  The put them on the fireplace for now.  All they wanted to do was stare at them.  I told them that fairies only come when they are not seen.  I said they would have to notice any differences in the morning to see if the fairies came and stayed at their house.

Lindsey's table made of twigs and acorns.
Kaylee's chair made from a random
piece of tree and a piece of bark.  I
guess with the hole in the middle, it looks
                                                    more like a fairy toilet...

Well, after the girls went to bed, I had a brainstorm.  I decided that because one has a tendency to whine and the other likes to harrass her sister, maybe a revamping of their behavior was in order.  Over the summer, I instituted a system where I took a jar for each kid and put 3 bells in them.  The girls had to keep at least one by the next morning, or they couldn't do our fun activity.  I decided that I would give them 7 bells and they would have to keep at least one by the end of the week to earn a present from the fairy.  Who wants to listen to mom anyways?  The only solution was to have the fairy that visited the house write a note telling them their name, what their interests were and how this system would work.  Granted, it has been instituted less than a day, but they have been wonderful today!

Fall Fun

Today felt like the perfect fall day.  The sun was out, and the temperature was perfect...around 60 degrees.  We started the day out at a Build and Grow Clinic at Lowe's, where the kids made fire engines.  Rob came this time, so I didn't have to build two things myself.  If you are interested in this, please view the post about the Build and Grow Clinic.

We decided to go to the Fall Festival at Petitti's Garden Center.  It is located at 18941 Pearl Rd.  The festival is free, but they ask for donations.  There is a corn pit, an inflated haunted house, a fall back drop where you can take pictures, and crafts.

The Haunted House is their favorite activity...
They do, however, like the corn pit as well!

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5...the girls have always enjoyed this, epecially the haunted house!

Well, after this, we were feeling quite festive, so we decided to go apple picking.  We were going to try Mapleside, but they were having the Appleseed Festival there, so I decided to avoid it.  We went there in the past, and you pay to get in, so that you can pay to buy more stuff from them, and then you can also pay for the hay maze, etc.  Not worth it in my opinion.  Anyways, we went to Hillside Orchard to pick apples.  It is located 2397 Center Rd. in Hinckley.  It cost $19 for a bag of apples, and we picked a TON of apples.  The trees were not picked over and they were not all that tall, in fact, the girls were able to reach their own apples.  They had a blast.  We came home and made an apple pie AND applesauce, and barely made a dent in the bag.  I am thinking that we will be eating apples every day until the girls graduate.

                                          Posing with the loot...

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5-I wish I would have taken them before now.  This is the first time we picked apples and they were so excited to do it-especially since they were able to reach the apples!

A Great Day for a Picnic

Today the girls and I went to Brandywine Falls.  It is part of the Cuyahoga Valley Park System and is located at 8176 Brandywine Rd. in Northfield, Oh.  It is only a few miles off of 271/Route 8.  When you get there and park, there are a couple of picnic tables and 2 trails.  One is a stone trail, the other is a wooden trail that looks like long decks.  There are a lot of stairs, and you can stay on the upper level, and get to the top of the falls, or go to the lower level, and go to the viewing deck that is near the middle of the falls.  This one provides a much better view, but it is a quick walk, so we did both.

The falls view from the lower deck

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5...they had fun looking at the falls, petting everyone's dogs and enjoying the nice weather.  It was very pretty and not too much walking for them.  Worth the 35 minute drive.

Football Season

Last Friday, we took the girls to a high school football game.  They went to a couple of games last year and a few the year before.  The kids have fun and it isn't a big deal if they want to walk around or talk.  They enjoy visiting the concession stands and staying up late.  Adult tickets were $6 each for games at Brunswick.  Kids tickets were free!

The girls enjoying a HS football game.

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5-they love going to football games, watching the cheerleaders and the majorettes.  To top it off, the candy at the concession stands is an added bonus.

Something New and Crafty

Today I took the girls to the Build and Grow class at Lowe's.  I actually saw it posted somewhere and looked into it, and am really glad that I did.  Lowe's hosts Build and Grow clinics every other week.  These classes are free and are adorable!  You have to create an account and register online, as space is limited.  Today, the theme was Dreamworks, and the kids made the onion coach from Shrek.  Once you sign up (and reserve your spot in the clinic), you print out a waiver and have to bring it with you.  They have several piles of stacked wood in the lumber area that they use for tables.  All of the kids were given goggles and an apron to wear that says "Lowe's Build and Grow."  They then pass out a packaged kit to each child and a name tag that goes right into their apron.  The projects are adult guided (i.e. you build it with your child).  In one place, it said it was for kids 5 and older, but in another, it was suggested that they be 5 and older (i.e. if your younger child swallows a small piece, don't hold them accountable).  Anyways, I signed both girls up and noone cared, and most of the kids there were around their age.  Next, the kids were given little hammers.  After building their creations, kids are given a certificate of completion and a badge that you iron onto the apron.  Google Lowe's and you can look up the schedule for your nearest location.  Build and Grow is on Saturdays and Sundays.

                                          Getting ready to start building...
                                          First time with a hammer...
Kaylee working hard on her project

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5-the girls had tons of fun and were especially excited to get a certificate and badge.  Lindsey wouldn't take her apron off, even when we went into other stores!

Crossing things off of the Fall Bucket List...

Last weekend, we crossed 2 things off of the bucket list for the fall: having a sleepover and roasting marshmallows.  Kaylee's friend from preschool spent the night.  Yes, 5 is a bit young, but the girls had a great time--but they did need to be kept busy.

First, we decided to cook our own pizza.  I just got the supplies and I let the kids put everything on the "already done" crust.  After the pizzas were baked and eaten, we played outside for awhile and then had a marshmallow roast and made s'mores.  Following all of that, we set up tents and had a campout/movie night.  The following day, the girls had a picnic and played at JUMP park in Medina.  JUMP is a playground in Medina that is rather big.  It is located on East Homestead Dr.

Oktoberfest

Today we took the girls to the Oktoberfest, in Olmsted Falls.  It runs from August 17-19 and opened at 6:00.  You have to buy tickets that you then use to buy your food.  It is $5 per person to get in (kids were free) and tickets are 50 cents each.  The most expensive thing on the menu was $11.50.  Anyways, my parents' friends invited everyone to meet there.  We packed the kids peanut butter sandwiches, assuming they wouldn't eat the food there.  They ate what I packed, and then realized their love for schnitzel.  Lindsey also liked the potato pancakes with applesauce, and they washed down their German food with diet coke, and then finished it off with ice cream.  It may not have been the healthiest food, but hey, the kids actually ate it, and they had fun.  They were not interested in trying out the Polka...

The Oktoberfest was located at 7370 Columbia Rd. in Olmsted Falls.

Outside Oktoberfest...the combination of full bellies
and a summer filled with picture taking...

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5...I was surprised they had as much fun as they did, but they really enjoyed it!

4.  Go to Ramseyer Farm
5.  Trick-or-Treat with Friends
6.  Boo at the Zoo, Trick-Or-Treat Street or Pirates and Princesses
7.  Attend Lorain County Princess Ball
8.  Go to Petitti's for the Halloween events
9.  Carlisle Reservation-ride the Little Green Choo and see the Halloween Festival
10.  Jump in a leaf pile
11. Have a sleepover
12.  Roast marshmallows over a bonfire
13.  Have a glow-in-the-dark party

Train Ride

Yesterday we took a ride on the miniature train at Lester Rail Trail.  They offer these rides 3 times a year, usually June, August and October.  There are only 1-2 days that these rides are scheduled, and usually they take place from 12:30-4:30.  You can google the Medina County Park District and look up the events to determine the next time the trains will run.  Train rides are free!  Please see the "Upcoming Events" blog for more information.

The girls on one of the miniature train rides...

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5...the girls have always enjoyed riding the miniature train.  We got there right at 12:30 and got onto a train quickly.  By the time we left, the wait was much longer, so try and get there as close to 12:30 as possible.

Playground...Indoors!

Every year, we take the kids to Playground World. There are two in the area: one in Avon and one in Chesterland.  Avon is closer.  Playground World is a store that sells playsets and Step 2 things.  There are several days when they have free playtime for kids.  The one in Avon offers this on Mondays and Thursdays from 11-12 and on Fridays from 10-11.  They offer play on other days, for $5 per hour.  They also host birthday parties.  There are several Rainbow sets up for kids to play on, two trampolines, some Step 2 houses, a roller coaster, a wagon, a small trampoline, some kitchen sets and an airplane, among other ride on toys.  It is located at 1014 Jaycox Rd. in Avon.  The company website is www.pgworld.com

                                                    One of the disc swings
                                                   Shooting a basket
                                          Flying on the airplane
                                                     Checking out the roller coaster

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5...even though they are getting bigger, the kids still have fun here.  It is great for babies and older kids.  There are some baby swings, and the Step 2 houses are really meant for kids..probably between the ages of 1 and 3.  Other things are geared more toward older kids, so really, kids of all ages can have fun here!

After this, we went out to lunch and back to the Miller Nature Preserve, mentioned in a previous post.  The girls loved the butterflies, which, as mentioned last time, are free.  We paid to do the conservatory.  It was only $2 per person, but not really worth it.
