Making the Most of It...

Well, yesterday pretty much everything that could go wrong in my planning did.  I asked the girls what they wanted to do.  They said they wanted to go to the pool.  I figured a day at the pool would be relaxing.  Unfortunately, I then remembered that our pool pins were attached to the pool bag, and the pool bag was in the back of Rob's car, and Rob's car was with Rob...at work.  No problem, we can make alternate arrangements.  So, I saw something online for this toy and train museum in Medina.  There were a few reviews, all of which were positive and mention of it being free.  I figured it would be a great alternative.  So, we drove to Medina, parked in the square and began searching for where the hell this place was.  Unfortunately, we found it.  It is not really a train museum, and there are not other toys there.  It is a store that sells train parts.  There are 2 trains set up...complete with signs saying "Do Not Touch."  On top of that, there were boxes all over the place and I felt like someone would be jumping out to film us from "Hoarders."  Noone seemed to care that we were there.  I left the store after about 5 minutes and took the girls to a nearby cafe for lunch.  As we ate, I was sure we missed something, so we went back again, were again ignored, and again found nothing of interest.  I felt like I let the kids down, so we went to Lemonberry in the square and called it a day.

Family Fun Day...

Today we took the kids to Rinky Dink, which is located at 2390 Medina Rd. (Rt. 18) in Medina.  Rinky Dink offers miniature golf, batting cages, bumper boats, go karts, Pirates vs. Aliens (they use blacklights and you shoot foam balls at targets, keeping score), a bounce house, arcade games and food.  There are height restrictions on the bounce house (younger kids only).  For really young kids, there is an area with blocks, boats, and other toys for them to play with. Kids can ride go karts and bumper boats with an adult; there are height restrictions on being in the go kart and also driving it yourself, and height restrictions to drive the bumper boats yourself.  You can pay for each thing seperatly..I think it is $6 per activity, or the cost is $20 for unlimited play for kids and $24.95 for adults.  We got a deal on groupon for $10 per kid and $12 per adult, so we were able to occupy the kids for 4 hours for $44 for the enitre family, as opposed to $90.  I would suggest going closer to when it opens-we were able to go on the go karts 3 times in a row with no wait.  By about 3:30, we had to wait in line for about 15 minutes or so.  The groupon included: unlimited bumper boats, unlimited go karts, unlimited mini golf, the bounce house for the kids, Pirates vs. Aliens, and 4 tokens to the batting cages.

Some of the go karts are built for 2...there are 2 seat-
                                           belts.
Kids have to wear a life jacket on the
bumper boats.  You can fit 2 small
children and one adult in the boats.
There are 2 different miniature golf courses.

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5...they had a great time and so did we!

Upcoming Events

So that everyone has some notice, I will post things here as I see them, so that you have the opportunity to try them out if you are interested...

August 4...from 12:30-4:30, ride the miniature train (for free).  It is located at the Lester Rail Trail.  The address is 3654 Lester Rd. in Medina.  Be glad that I found and posted an address...they used to only give you GPS coordinates and this is not an easy place to find.  You can google Medina County Parks at www.medinacountyparks.com.  If you click on "programs and activities" on the left, it is under the NEOLS tab.  We have gone here a couple of times.  You basically straddle over a bench and go for a train ride that lasts about 10 minutes.  You have to hold onto your kids, so you probably realistically couldn't take more than 2 kids without another adult.  Also, make sure you get there closer to 12:30 than 4:30, as it tends to get crowded and, eventually, they will turn people away, which has happened to us before!  Usually, they have a Halloween train, but there are rules about costumes (can't be long) and the lines are extremely long.
The girls on the miniature railroad...

Dive In Movie: Located within the Hinckley Reservation of the Metroparks, the Dive-In Movie takes place at Ledge Pool.  We have never been able to go before, and won't be able to make it this year, but they are showing the Muppets on August 10th.  This is free, but for a fee, you can rent floats to watch from the pool!

Medina County Fair: The Medina County Fair takes place at the Medina Fairgrounds.  It starts this week.  You have to pay to get in-$2 per child and either $8 or $10 per adult (don't remember for sure).  You can google it to check the schedule.  There are animals, food and rides.  Rides are usually 2-3 tickets, or you can buy a wrist band, which is a better deal.  On Wednesday, it is kids day, and they can get a wrist band for $10.  They also get in for free before 5:00.
They also have a driving school where kids can drive cars through a town, and then get a certificate/license.  We have done this one time.  We tried last year, but just to warn you, most parents do not watch their kids while they play in here and they tend to steal the cars from other kids, hit, throw tantrums and not share.  I find this to be somewhat irritating, so I check it out before allowing my kids to play in there.

I will add more things to this page as they become available.  Unfortuantely, my summer vacation is limited now, and it is time to get back to reality.  There are tons of fall activities for kids, so I will post them, but only weekly.

The Mother of All Playdates...A Day in Mansfield

Today was the rescheduled playdate from a few weeks ago.  We spent the day in Mansfield.  First, we went to Kingwood Center, which is located at 900 Park Ave. in Mansfield.  There is a duck pond and there are two peacocks.  There are machines that dispense some food for 25 cents so that you can feed the ducks or peacocks.  There are flowers everywhere, a spice garden, a water garden and fountains.  The girls really enjoyed it.  There is a cost, but it is only $5 for a carload of people, and it was well worth it!
                                                    Feeding the ducks
                                                    The greenhouse
One of the peacocks...a favorite for the girls
                                         Scenery
                                          More flowers
                                                    The water lillies

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5-the girls had fun and enjoyed feeding the ducks and seeing the peacocks.  It is a great deal for $5!

Following Kingwood Center, we went out to lunch at the Blueberry Patch.  It is located at 1285 W. Hanley Rd. in Mansfield.  You can pick blueberries and rapsberries there, there is a gift shop and there is a small cafe there.  There is a children's menu that has PB & J and macaroni and cheese.  For adults, they have several selections, but the chicken salad with blueberries in it was excellent.  The kids also got a mikshake for dessert.  It is very small, so you should make reservations.
The girls at Blossoms Cafe, at The Blueberry Patch

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5...the kids didn't really eat any food here, but I give it 5/5 because the food was great!

                                                    Grocery Shopping at Little Buckeyes
                                                    The pediatrician
                                                     Water Tables

After lunch, we headed over to Little Buckeyes Children's Museum, which is located at 44 W. 4th St. in Mansfield, and the web address is www.littlebuckeyes.org.  This museum is great and not very expensive...only $6 per person.  It is realtively new and this year, they opened the water tables, a hair salon, the mulch (sand) area, and a climbing area with a slide.  In addition, there is a grocery store, science lab, vet's office, children's hospital, bank, gardening area and cars the kids can drive.  The next phase will have a tea room and school house.  Look on the site for days and hours they are open!

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 6/5--they love this and there is always something new here!

After all of this, we took the girls to the Richland Carousel Park, which is located on 4th St and is within walking distance from Little Buckeyes.  Rides are $1 or 6 for $5.
                                                     Fun on the Carousel

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5--it is a fun way to end a great playdate!

Staying indoors...

The weather has been difficult to determine, so today's original plan was to go on a picnic in a park.  Due to the 94 degree temperature, heat advisory and chance of severe thunderstorms, this will be rescheduled.  We started out by putting up a small tent and having a picnic in there.  Next, we went to the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center.  It is located at 28728 Wolf Rd., in Bay Village.  We had just gone to a nature center yesterday, but I figured it couldn't hurt to try a new one.  There are a lot of things to do and see here.  There is a huge hickory tree right by the entrance.  Though kids are not permitted to climb on it, they are allowed to crawl through it.  There is a planetarium, but there are certain times when you can see something there, and tickets cost anywhere between $1 and $3.  The rest of the place is free.  There is huge board with an astronaut where kids can put their head in the head hole, and an outdoor area.  I couldn't tell what all was out there, since it was closed today.  There is an area with bees and you can watch them in a hive, and there are animals, including fish, reptiles (yes, snakes too), and turtles.  There is a play area for kids with books, games, puzzles, a tree house and a puppet theater.

Picnicing indoors, and avoiding the heat
Climbing through the hickory at LENSC
                                                    Checking out the turtles
Having a play at the puppet theater
                                                    Seeing bees in the hive

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5-definately a good time, and it kept the kids interest.  We will go back again, and hopefully get to see the outside sites!

Nature and Art

Well, I found an art class for kids online and thought I would try it out.  Since the class for kids in the girls' age group was at 3:30, I needed to find something quick to occupy their morning.  After a trip to the library to get a prize for reading another 15 books, we stopped at the Susan Hambley Nature Center in Brunswick.  On some Wednesdays (I think just in the summer), they have special events for kids.  When we got there, there were games set up outside.  Inside, they had some sort of animal show at 1:00 (the girls were not interested) and they had a craft, where they got to make turtles, which turned out pretty cute.  If you are Monica Shaheen...I would strongly advise you not to go, as there are snakes here!  The nature center is a log cabin and inside, there are some animals...turtles, snakes and fish.  They have what I think is a stuffed deer and coyote...There are rocking chairs as well.  When you go outside, there is a trail (I think it is 1/2 a mile).  It is all shaded, so even if it is hot out, the trail isn't bad.  It is all free!  The nature center is located at 143 Parschen Blvd, in Brunswick.  You can find information at www.medinacountyparks.com.  They are open Wednesday-Sunday.

The turtle craft that was set up
                                                    The peaceful trail

So, back to the art class.  We took the kids to an art class at The Light Academy.  They are located at 21446 Lorain Rd. in Fairview Park.  The class was $16 and lasted an hour.  The kids painted some things-we were allowed to leave and the teacher played music and let them create...They made a painting with water bottles and also made flowers out of paper towel rolls.  Did I mention that we didn't have to stay??  The class was for kids ages 3-6, but they also have classes for older kids, and I think a mommy and me type class.  They also told me about their Yoga classes.  The kids would be in the fairy class, where they get to wear tutus and do Yoga.  I don't think that this is something my kids will miss out on...though I do have to buy them Yoga mats.  It might be worth it.  Last year Kaylee's school offered afterschool programs for kids, which included Yoga.  How fun!

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating of Hambley Nature Center: 5/5-the second time we have been here and the girls had a good time.  They enjoy the crafts!
Kaylee and Lindsey Rating of The Light Academy: 5/5-though I don't know what they really did, there were finished products at the end and they said they liked it.  It was something different, and I am glad they got to try it out!

Hanging out in the Jungle

Today we decided to go to Amazone, in Medina, Ohio.  Amazone is an indoor play area.  There are slides, and bunch of things for the kids to climb in and play in.  For an additional fee, there is also laser tag and there are arcade games.  We had a playdate here with one of Kaylee's friends from school.  Admission to the playground is $8 for kids ages 3 and older and $4 if under 3.  There is a toddler playground for little kids, but the little ones can go on the bigger playground...with a parent.  They sell food like chicken nuggets and pizza, drinks, candy, slushies, etc.  Today we got cheesy bread and the kids liked it and it tasted better than what you would get at Chuck E. Cheese, which, if I haven't mentioned before, I hate.  Amazone is located at 2789 Medina Rd (Route 18).  The website is www.myamazone.com.  Check groupon for discounts-I got 2 admissions for $8.  They will also give you a punch card to gain free admission after several paid admissions, and they tend to give out dollar off coupons at local parades (i.e. Brunswick Old Fashioned Days).

The girls in front of some of the slides at Amazone.

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5-the kids always have fun here.  They get a wrist band with a number on it and they give the parent a slip of paper with the numbers on it.  You need it to get out with your kids.

So, clearly this didn't last the whole day.  To kill time, I decided to try an activity from Pinterest.  If you are not already on Pinterest, I highly suggest joining...they have great ideas!  This one was for ice excavating.  Basically, you freeze toys in a block of ice and have the kids get them out.  I added a drop of blue food coloring and added in some fish and mermaids.  I froze it overnight.  I let it sit out for about 15 minutes prior to play so that the ice would come out of the container.  I didn't really know what to give the girls to try and get the toys out, so I gave them a metal knife sharpener, since the end was not sharp.  I was doubting their ability to actually get it, but have to admit that I am quite impressed with their strength and determination.  They did a number on the block of ice, retreived all of their toys and had a great time doing it!

One ice block with sea creatures frozen inside
                                          Two determined children
                                                    A successful rescue mission...Ariel is
                                                    saved from the evil iceberg.

To end the night, we had a playdate with their friend.  The kids played in the sandbox, on the swings and rode in the Barbie Jeep.  We even drove down to the lake so they could feed the ducks.  All in all, a good day!

Cooling off...

We just got back from spending the last few days with family in Toledo.  I had a bunch of things to do today (like cleaning the house and doing laundry), plus it was hot out and the park that I had originally planned on didn't sound all that thrilling.  Plus, I needed to go shopping to get the girls a girly wallet.  You see, when we were in Toledo, Kaylee asked for a dollar before we went to the Mud Hens game.  I gave her one and she wanted to hold it the whole time.  By the end of the night, she had $4.  I got her to put it into a plastic bag. Lindsey then wanted one too.  It seemed like a wallet would be a better option.

So, we headed out to Crocker Park, with 3 goals in mind: buy wallets, play in the water, and get cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory.  All three goals were accomplished.  We first went to H & M and got 2 Hello Kitty wallets for $5 each. Then, we headed to the fountains to play.  The water is on from 1-4.  It stays on for 15 minutes and then goes off for 10 minutes.  Make sure if you go, you bring towels and a change of clothes.  Most kids do wear bathing suits, but the first time the girls played in here, I was with friends and playing in there was unexpected.  The end result was 3 moms running through all the kids stores in Crocker Park with wet kids, looking to buy outfits to change them into.

Following the fountains, I got my cheesecake!  The girls ate the whipped cream from the cheesecake and split some french fries.  Crocker Park is located at 25 Main St. in Weslake, Ohio.  The website is www.crockerpark.com.

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 4/5....the girls had fun in the water, but it turned off a lot and they seemed to enjoy it more when they were little.

Movies

Movies are something that you can go to at any point in the year, however, in the summer, there are more options, and opportunities for free or discounted admission.

Regal Cinemas, Medina: A couple of years ago, this theater offered free movies for kids, one day per week.  Currently, they show movies at 10:00 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  They now cost $1, but it is an inexpensive option if you are looking for something to do to stay out of the heat.  It is located at 200 West Reagan Pkwy in Medina.

Hickory Ridge Cinemas, Brunswick: This theater is located at 1055 Pearl Rd. in Brunswick.  You can get information online at www.hickoryridgecinema.net.  On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, you get free popcorn with each paid admission.

Dive-In Movie: This year, the movie is on August 10.  It is free and is at the Hinckley Reservation.  While I would love to take the kids, the timing will not work out with my schedule this year.  From what I have read, you are able to rent tubes and float on the water while watching the movie.  If you choose to instead sit on the land, you can as well.  The movie is free.  The website is www.clemetparks.com.

Friday Night Flicks: The Columbia Reservation, in the Lorain County Metroparks offers free movies on Friday nights.  You bring your own chairs (and lots of bug spray) and set up a spot on the miniature golf course.  They start at 8:45.  You can find out which movie is playing by calling 440-236-3663.  The address is 25145 Royalton Rd. in Columbia Station.  There is a snack bar that services food, including pizza and ice cream.  The movie is free.  We went last year and it was fun!

Crocker Park/Legacy Village: On Thursdays at 9:00,  Crocker Park shows outdoor movies in their pavillion.  You can find out which movies are showing by visiting their website at www.crockerpark.com.  It is located at 25 Main St., in Weslake.  You can visit the Legacy Village website at www.legacy-village.com to see what movies are playing there.  It is located at 25001 Cedar Rd. in Lyndhurst, Ohio.  Check the website for movie days and times.

Drive-In: The Autorama in North Ridgeville offers a double feature each night during warmer months.  Admission is $9 for adults, $3 for kids ages 4-12 and free if they are under 4.  See previous blog for information.

Sports/Activities

Well, today we are in the Toledo area visiting family until Sunday.  I am not going to post too much for now.  As summer winds down, I will have to go back to work.  At that point, I will probably just post weekly with some ideas for fall and winter.  At any point of the year, there are plenty of options of classes that teach sports or some sort of activity to kids, and many other options that do not involve taking a class.

Gymnastics:  Our kids took gymnastics, originally, at The Little Gym.  While this is a great option for younger kids (I'd say up to 2 years old), it is also quite expensive, and most of the locations near us have closed.  We signed them up for actual classes at Five Star Gymnastics, in the Brusnwick Industrial Park.  We really liked the teachers here.  Tuition is charged monthly and classes are in terms that consist of 3 months.  At the end of each term, they have a "show what you know" day where kids get to bring parents into the gym to demonstrate skills on the equipment, and this is followed by distribution of medals and ribbons.  Classes start out with parent-child classes, then a 3 year old, 4 year old and 5 year old class.  Some classes focus on competitive gymnastics.  I am not going to put down an address, as the place is in the process of moving to another location within the Industrial Park.  Their website is www.five-stargym.com.  They also host birthday parties here, and it is where we had Lindsey's last party!
                                                    Kaylee at her awards ceremony

Medina Rec Center: I also had my kids in gymnastics at the Medina Rec Center.  The program is called Tumble Stars and it is much less expensive than a typical gymnastics place.  Lindsey even got a ribbon at the end.  The website for the rec center is: www.medinarec.org.  It is located at 855 Weymouth Rd. in Medina.
Lindsey at her gymnastics class at
                                                    the Medina Rec Center.

Dance: I have had Kaylee in dance lessons since she was 3 years old.  Her first class was at the Medina Rec Center for their class.  There were 4 classes.  Kids could wear whatever they wanted and they provided the props.  At the last class, they did a show for the parents.  It was relatively inexpensive and worked out well in the summer.  The problem was during the school year, when the times conflicted too much with my work schedule.
Following that, both girls took dance lessons at a local place in Brunswick.  Since my review of the place is not a positive one, I will not put their name in here.  Lindsey was in a Mommy and Me class and Kaylee was in the 4 year old class.  We paid full tuition every month and usually got 3 classes in a month, though there were several months with only 2 classes.  They only had 4 classes in a month twice.  There was no break in tuition, even though other classes usually had 4 sessions per month AND there were two times when they canceled classes, and it had nothing to do with weather.  Lindsey quit in February.  Kaylee stuck it out.  There were 5 kids in her class.  There was no control over what kids were doing, and the teacher spent more time chasing kids around who didn't listen than she did teaching.  Basically, we wasted time and money that year.
Last year, I signed both girls up for a preschool dance class at Dancexcel in Brunswick.  Granted, both girls were older, but I cannot say enough good things about them.  There were 16 kids in the class.  There was one teacher and 2 helpers.  When I peeked into the classroom, ALL of the kids were behaving.  The girls would dance around the house and tell me the names of moves.  When it was time to go to class, they were happy.  The price was similar to what we paid the previous year, but I was so much more satisfied with what the kids got out of it!  Their website is www.dancexcelstudio.com.  They are located at 50 Pearl Rd. #102.  We had Kaylee's 5th birthday party at Medina Centre for Dance Art in Medina.  We have never taken dance lessons there, but they did a wonderful job with her party.  Their website is www.mcda.com
Kaylee at the Rec Center dance class
The girls at their dress rehearsal for Dancexcel

Sports:  Kaylee played t-ball through JumpStart Sports.  They offer t-ball, soccer, cheerleading, football and basketball.  Kids get a free t-shirt and some sort of award at the end.  Kaylee got a trophy.  Their website is www.jumpstartsports.com
Kaylee playing t-ball.  She didn't care
                                                    for it too much!

Swimming: Though they have gone through phases of being scared of going under water, swimming is a necessity for safety reasons.  Kaylee took lessons at the Brunswick Rec Center last year and didn't care for it.  This year, they took lessons at the Old Mill Village pool, which is where we live.  Lindsey was not into it and quit, but Kaylee took lessons and really liked them.  The Brunswick Rec Center has an indoor pool, and therefore, offers lessons all year long.  Obviously, Old Mill Village only offers lessons in the summer.  The nice thing about our pool (aside from it being close) is that there were only 4 kids in a class and 2 teachers.  The Brunswick Rec Center website is www.brunswick.oh.us and the Old Mill Village website is www.oldmillvillage.net

Kaylee swimming at the Old Mill Village
                                                   pool.

Ice Skating: My kids have never officially taken formal skating lessons.  We have taken them skating before, though, at Hoover Arena in Strongsville.  When we went one time in the winter, it was National Ice Skating week and they offered free mini lessons.  The instructor was wonderful and both girls took (and liked the mini lesson).
                                                    Lindsey at the mini lesson

Roller Skating: The Brunswick Skate Station is located in the Industrial Park.  They offer group skating lessons on Saturdays, and for $5, you get a lesson and skate rental.  The kids were not all that thrilled with it, but that might be based on age.  It is located at 1261 North Industrial Pkwy.  The website is www.statestation.net.
                                                    Kaylee at the Skate Station...

Cooking:  We took Kaylee and a friend of hers to Young Chef's Academy in Strongsville last summer.  I had high expectations, especially since the class was $15 for an hour long class and there were probably 8 kids in there.  It is cute in that the kids each get to pick out an apron to wear, and then are instructed to wash their hands.  They sit around a counter on stools and make a different food each time.  When we went, the kids made elephant ears.  I was somewhat disappointed with it.  They didn't get their own ingredients or anything, instead, the whole class made one batch of them and so Kaylee ended up dumping in a cup of flour, which was measured out and leveled by the teacher.  After it was mixed, each group of kids was given a small amount of dough to spread on the table (it stuck) and then the teacher brushed it with butter and sprinkled on cinnamon and sugar.  They got to share rolling it up and then the teacher cut it.  Worst of all, the kids didn't really like the end product.  On a positive note, however, Buehler's in Brunswick offers cooking classes for kids.  I believe they need to be 5 or 6, so it is not really for younger kids.  With that said, they offer reasonably priced cooking birthday parties for kids.  This is where Lindsey's birthday party will be.  From what I am told, the kids get to make pizza, dip for veggies, punch, and a popcorn snack.  They get to decorate their own cupcake at the end and then the kids all will sign an apron for the birthday girl.  Twelve kids...$125, and it is not in my house!  Can't beat that!  Review of birthday party to follow...
                                                    Kaylee baking at Young Chef's...

Storytime:  We haven't done it lately, but last year, we took the girls to Buehler's on Mondays for story time.  They would read the kids a book, do a related craft and then make and eat a related snack.  The cost is $2 currently.  It was pretty cute, and worth the $2.  At the end, they would raffle off the book.

Crafting: Well, the Brunswick Library has free crafts that the kids can make via make and take.  There is always something there for them to do.  Additionally, Pat Catan's has classes that they can take, and so does Joann, Etc.  We haven't done these classes, so I can't really comment on them.  Additionally, Young Rembrandts offers art classes at most Michael's stores, and there is a place called The Light Academy in Fairview Park that offers art classes for $15 per class.  I have the girls signed up at Light Academy next week for a class, so I will post a review of it!

Bowling:  We have taken the kids to several different bowling alleys, usually Dick Hoover, in Brunswick.  It is not too expensive and you can do it any time of the year.  They will put up the bumpers for the kids.  They have enjoyed it!

Safari Fun

Today, we went to the African Wildlife Safari in Port Clinton, Ohio.  We took the girls last year, and we had a great time, so we decided to go again this year.  First of all, never pay full price for tickets at the door.  They are $22 for adults and not much better for kids.  There are always groupon deals, and Lindsey got in for free since she is still 3 (3 and under are free).  Last year, we got a groupon for $5 each, and this year the best deal I could find was $8 each....but it was still a better deal than paying full price!  If you have zoo membership, you get half off, so it is still best to find a deal on groupon.  I have even seen discount tickets on facebook.  Just remember, it is the least expensive if you go on a weekday, as opposed to a weekend.

The African Wildlife Safari is about halfway between our house and Rob's parents, so we try and tackle it on the way to their house.  When you pull in, there is a shack where you pay for admission (or redeem your groupon).  You then get a receipt and a ticket for a free "bucket" of feed....but it is really just a large cup.  They also sell carrots, which the animals love, for $5 per bag.  They say you shouldn't bring the $1 a bag carrots that they sell at Marc's...

There is a parking area where you can park and go into a gift shop.  When you walk through there, they have a snack shop and sell ice cream.  There is an area with restrooms where you can walk around.  There are some animals in there (geese, monkeys, capybara, pigs, llama, etc.).  They also offer free rides on the camel for up to 2 kids (there is a weight limit of 100 pounds).  Last year, they could also ride ponies, but they aren't there this year.

You can then drive through the safari.  When you roll down your windows, the animals will flock to your car.  They will stick their heads in looking for food.  You either hold out the cup of food, or hold out a carrot.  At the very end, there are giraffes and zebra, so be sure to save some food for them!

A Capybara in the "zoo" part of the safari.  You are
not permitted to feed any of the animals in this
                                           section.

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5-the girls loved it this year, and last year as well.  It is a lot of fun!

Indoor/Outdoor Fun

Today we went to Carlisle Reservation.  Again, it is part of the Lorain County Metroparks.  Carlisle Reservation has a duck pond, an equestrian center, an outdoor playground and an indoor playspace.  It is located at 12882 Diagonal Rd. in LaGrange, Ohio.  On Saturdays and Sundays, kids can ride the Little Green Choo, and there is a fall festival at Halloween, when the Little Green Choo goes through a Halloween-themed trail that is not too scary.

The indoor playspace has a ramp, an upper level with
climbing toys; a slide; under ground tunnels with lit windows
with things inside of them; drawers of toys; caged turtles and
snakes; and an "upstairs" that they can climb up to.

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5--the kids like playing in here and it was too hot to be outside today.  Once kids are past about age 5, it would probably not be that much fun though.

Kidddie Park and Ice Cream...

Today we did a playdate with some friends.  We started out at the Memphis Kiddie Park.  The park is for kids under 52 inches and there are 11 or 12 rides.  Adults can go on 3 rides with kids: roller coaster, train and carousel.  The train is a bit bumpy and hard to squish into.  I would suggest waiting until your kids want to go on by themselves.  Each ride is one ticket, and tickets vary in price depending on how much you buy.  A book of 25 is $25.25, and single tickets are almost $2 each.  They never expire, so it is best to just buy the book.  There are coupons in the book for many things, including free popcorn.  You are not permitted to bring in your own food, and theirs is really overpriced...I paid $1.75 for a small drink for my kids.  Memphis Kiddie Park is located at 10340 Memphis Ave. in Brooklyn, Oh.

                                                     the kids favorite ride!

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5-the girls love the kiddie park, although today it was extremely hot.  It is not usually too crowded and so there are rarely lines.  It is also a great place to have a birthday party.

Following the kiddie park, we went on a picnic in a park in North Olmsted, but to be honest, I am not sure of the name of it.  It is located on West Park, which is off of Lorain Road.  There are swings, a gazebo and some play strucutres, plus two covered pcinic areas.

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5...better on cooler days, but we came here last year and the girls had a great time.

Following the park, we decided to go to Malley's for ice cream.  Malley's is known for their chocolates, but some locations also have ice cream.  The one in North Olmsted has a carousel that you can sit on to eat your ice cream, and it really moves!  It is located at 23473 Lorain Rd. in North Olmsted.

Kaylee and Lindsey Rating: 5/5....what can I say it is ice cream and a carousel...what kid wouldn't love it??
